How to benefit from Mercury Retrograde

On Thursday, March 22nd, Mercury has entered its infamous Retrograde phase and will stay there until April 15th.

Mercury Retrograde has gotten a bad rap.

Communication problems, travel delays, technology breakdowns… all of this makes it hard to really look forward to this period. However, there is a way to use this time for our Highest Good.

Life is like an ocean. We can stand there and let the waves hit us and wonder why everything is going against us, or we learn how to ride the waves and enjoy our time here on Earth.

What does Mercury Retrograde mean?

When we say Mercury is retrograde it means that from the point of view of Earth, Mercury seems to move backwards. This is an optical illusion as Earth moves past Mercury in its orbit around the Sun. Similar to when we pass a car on the freeway, the other car looks like it is stopping and then moving backwards.

This optical illusion of Mercury Retrograde is very important on a metaphysical level, since during this time illusions of all sorts will come to the surface.

Mercury Retrograde will bring out shadows from our subconscious, hidden things that we have forgotten, that we have neglected or that we have denied. Since we can expect delays and problems in all things Mercury – writing, publishing, selling, traveling, technology, communication – this period will bring us ample time to re-connect, re-think and re-flect on our life.

When Mercury is direct its energy operates mostly on Left Brain activities… logic, reason, control, analysis and practicality, the yang (masculine) energies within us.

When Mercury goes retrograde its energy shifts towards Right Brain activities like creativity, intuition, sensuality, imagination, the yin (feminine) energies within us.

People with Mercury Retrograde in their natal chart will most likely enjoy this period because the energies on Earth are matching their own inner energies and they are used to indulge in right brain activities anyway.

For people with direct Mercury in their birth chart who love control, order and logic in their lives this period can be chaotic and frustrating, unless you know what to expect… and how to use it for your highest good.

(If you're unsure what your natal Mercury is, you can order a report here.)

How to use Mercury Retrograde for your Highest Good:

It is advised to not make any major decisions during this time, to not sign contracts without rereading the small print, and to not plan too diligently during travels (since it is most likely to happen differently than you expect anyway).

Funny enough, I felt Mercury Retrograde while writing this blog post.

Last night I was almost finished with it when I thought to myself, oh I need to save this! The moment I wanted to click "save", my 10-month old daughter Emma came and touched the screen and BAM everything was gone. All gone. I was like, nooooo! And Emma looked at me and started crying, and I said, oh it’s ok, it’s Mercury Retrograde. What was I thinking not saving this during Mercury Retrograde while even writing about it?!

Moral of the story: If you do anything technology wise in the upcoming weeks until April 15th make sure, you save your work. Thank you for the reminder, universe 😉

Knowing that it was Mercury Retrograde, it helped me to forgive, let go and know that the new blog post I write the next day after more reflection will be even better.

The key is to let go of control.

As long as we want to control our lives, Mercury Retrograde will come and destroy the way we operate. It will be like a storm changing our course of lives while we’re desperately trying to hold onto what we think we need to do. This will cause suffering.

However, if we let go of control, if we go with the flow, then Mercury Retrograde can be a very creative and intuitive time, especially in the dreamy compassionate sign of Pisces. It can be a period in our lives where we ...

... go within, restructure our tasks, reflect on any limiting beliefs that are holding us back from moving forward and then come out stronger than before.

Instead of seeing Mercury Retrograde as a curse, we can then see it as a gift.

A gift to help us on our life’s journey, to bring out our highest potential.

When Mercury goes Direct on April 15th you have the power to move forward with your goals and implement all that you’ve learned throughout this period.

Be gentle with yourself. Take your time. And don’t take things too seriously. In the end, life is a game and you are meant to enjoy yourself.
